Regain Your Dazzling Smile With Teeth Whitening!

Teeth whitening

Have you ever wished for the perfect smile like that of Julia Roberts which makes our hearts melt? Aren’t we all smitten with her perfect pearly whites? Now you too can have that glorious set of shiny white teeth, thanks to a simple teeth whitening procedure.

What Is Teeth Whitening?

Teeth-whitening is a procedure in the field of cosmetic dentistry that helps in getting rid of the yellowness or stains on the teeth. Our teeth generally tend to lose their brightness due to innumerable reasons like diet, age, medical conditions, etc. The outer covering of the teeth called enamel (the hardest substance in the body) is affected due to this.

Teeth-whitening targets the enamel and whitens teeth externally. In simple words, it whitens the teeth and paves the way for a perfectly brilliant smile.

However, there are various doubts that may sprout up in your mind when thinking about getting teeth whitening. Don’t worry, Dr. Harmanpreet Kaur of Dental Designer, (North Plainfield, New Jersey) has written this blog to explain the process and everything related to it.

Why Do Dentists Recommend Teeth Whitening?

There are multiple reasons why your dentist may have recommended teeth whitening to you. In this section, we will breakdown the causes that lead to a loss of tooth enamel. This loss makes the teeth appear dull and yellow. In such scenarios teeth whitening is recommended.

1. Diet

Our teeth go through a lot daily. They have to face tremendous amounts of changes in the intake of food ranging from sugary sweets to alcoholic beverages. Our diet is one of the major factors that affect the appearance of the teeth. Generally, foodstuffs containing caffeine like tea and coffee have an adverse effect upon the teeth thus staining them.

2. Ageing

Age is also a major factor that contributes towards the yellowing teeth. As a person ages, the layer of enamel upon the teeth slowly decreases and this affects the brightness of the teeth. Having other dental issues like cavities, plaque build-up, tartar accumulation, etc. which may come naturally with ageing also directly or indirectly affect how our teeth look.

Who Is An Ideal Candidate For Teeth Whitening?

Any adult whose teeth show signs of dullness and yellowing can undergo the teeth whitening procedure in a good dentist’s clinic.

However, it is often advisable for kids under the age of sixteen to avoid the process altogether as it might increase the amount of tooth sensitivity.

How Is Teeth Whitening Procedure Performed?

Teeth whitening can be performed either at home or at the dentist’s clinic. There is a variety of teeth whitening strips, gels, OTC tubes of toothpaste available that are used for at-home teeth whitening. Your dentist may also prescribe a process that can be carried out in the comfort of your home. Teeth –whitening products often involve one of the following bleaches: hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. These bleaches work on the outer enamel thus clearing it of any dullness or stains.

Even though teeth whitening products are easily available in the market, they are not as effective as a teeth whitening session at your dentist’s clinic. Also, teeth-whitening can generally be performed by a dentist in a single session whereas at-home products need to be used daily or alternately as instructed on the packaging. The quantities of the bleaches vary from product to product thus changing the methods of application.

In case you decide to opt for at-home whitening solutions, then please ensure that you double-check the ingredients, application and expiry date before using them.

After all, nobody would want to end up like Ross from F.R.I.E.N.D.S.! Or worst, in an emergency room. Hence, caution first.

When a dentist performs teeth- whitening at the clinic the amount of bleach in the product is higher as compared to that of other products that need to be used more frequently. Teeth whitening procedure needs only one session at the clinic. A good dentist can assure absolute safety and proper care due to their expertise. This type of teeth-whitening lasts longer and appears more natural. It definitely gives you a brilliant smile!

What Are The Risks Associated With Teeth Whitening?

All medical procedures come with a certain degree of risk. But teeth whitening is one of the safest and most proven ways to regain your brilliant smile. The risks associated with this procedure are minimal and not severe.

Teeth whitening commonly leads to –

1. Increase in tooth sensitivity (for a short period of time)
2. Mild gingival irritation (for a couple of days after the process)

In rare cases, it may cause –
1. tooth erosion,
2. tooth mineral degradation,
3. increased susceptibility to demineralization, and
4. pulpal damage

Teeth whitening has a direct impact on the patient’s oral health and hygiene. Hence, it is essential for a patient to consult a dentist before the teeth whitening process.

Does Teeth Whitening Work On Patients With Dental Crowns, Bridges or Implants?

Let us now assume that a patient has veneers, dental crowns, bridges or dental implants after undergoing through certain dental treatments.

Would the whitening work here then? The answer would be no. Teeth-whitening is a process that can be carried only on natural teeth. Thus, people who already have undergone dental treatments like root canal cannot benefit from teeth-whitening for those artificial teeth.

Dazzling Smile And Healthy Teeth!

Teeth- whitening is a method that helps counter the dullness of the teeth. It is beneficial in multiple ways. It not only helps in making the smile brighter but also aids in reducing plaque build-up and chances of gum disease.  This helps in reducing and preventing any tooth-related issues or gum diseases that often accompany age. After all, prevention is definitely better than cure. Teeth whitening is beneficial as it induces the urge to have better oral hygiene practices as well.

This is a simple technique has made it possible to have a dazzling smile and good oral health. In case you have any further queries, you can get in touch with Dr. Harmanpreet Kaur anytime

7 Ways To Achieve A Brilliant Smile

brilliant smile

Your smile is not just a part of your face or looks, but a huge part of your personality. Your brilliant smile reflects who you are and gives you tremendous self-confidence.

Unfortunately, we are not born with a perfect set of teeth. Some of us may have misaligned teeth or crooked teeth. Some of us may have experienced tooth loss well into our adulthood and think there is no solution. But thanks to Cosmetic Dentistry an advanced speciality in Dentistry, dentists can now help you achieve the brilliant smile you have been dreaming of.

Dr Harmanpreet Kaur of Dental Designer, North Plainfield (New Jersey) has written this blog to show patients the infinite possibilities of Cosmetic Dentistry. In this blog, we will be discussing what are the different cosmetic procedures and how these procedures can transform your smile into a brilliant smile!

What Is Cosmetic Dentistry?

Cosmetic Dentistry as the name suggests is a branch of dentistry that focuses on the appearance of the patient’s teeth. The procedures and techniques in Cosmetic Dentistry can resolve dental issues regarding the colour, shape, position, size or overall symmetry of the teeth.

Patients who undergo Cosmetic Dentistry procedures have seen a vast improvement in the aesthetic appearance of their teeth and smile.

What Are The Different Procedures Of Cosmetic Dentistry?

Let us walk through the different procedures that can drastically improve your teeth’s appearance:

  • Teeth Whitening

If your teeth are stained or have lost color and shine over time, then you might want to look at a Teeth Whitening procedure. Teeth whitening or bleaching helps patients in regaining the natural white color of their teeth.

It is one of the most common cosmetic dental procedures that are safe and effective. It is also a non-invasive procedure. Hence, a lot of patients prefer this. In fact, there are some at-home products that can also be used for teeth whitening.

But it is preferable to visit a dentist who will evaluate your general dental health and the amount of bleaching chemical necessary for your teeth. This is safer and quicker than a “do-it-yourself” bleaching solution.

  • Dental Veneers

Dental Veneers are another option for getting that brilliant smile you have dreamt of. This is a procedure where veneers made of porcelain or composite resin material is permanently bonded with the patient’s teeth.

Dental Veneers are super-thin in size and are 100% customized for the patient’s teeth. This makes them perfect for cosmetic dentistry. Using dental veneers, a dentist can change the shape and colour of the tooth. This process can also close gaps between teeth.

Dentists do not perform a dental veneer procedure in one sitting. There are multiple factors involved before a patient is fitted with veneers. The dentist will first evaluate the general oral health, then take pictures of your teeth and gums. She will then decide which teeth need veneers. After that, the size and material to be used will be agreed upon with the patient. Impressions of the teeth will be taken for perfecting the veneer. Over the next few sessions, the dentist will fit the veneers onto your teeth.

Dental veneers are a long-lasting solution. They can correct asymmetrical teeth, crooked or misshapen teeth.

  • Dental Implants

Dental Implants is not just a cosmetic procedure but also a restorative procedure. While the other procedures listed above were elective, this one is a necessity for some patients. Many times patients lose their teeth during their adult life and face trouble with simple tasks like chewing or speaking. They need dental implants to restore their oral health.

Dental implants are artificial replacements for lost teeth. Dental implant surgery replaces the root area of the missing tooth with metal, screw-like posts in which the artificial tooth can be implemented. The artificial teeth look and act just like real ones, so this type of surgery can be a great alternative to wearing dentures or having ill-fitting bridgework done.

A highly-skilled dentist is necessary to perform this procedure because dental implants stay with the patient for the rest of their lives.

  • Invisalign Treatment

Misshapen teeth is a big hurdle when patients want to have a brilliant smile. Traditionally the answer to misshapen teeth has been putting on braces. Braces take a long time to give patients the desired effect. They are also painful and involve surgical procedures.

Invisalign treatment, on the other hand, is comfortable, safe and effective. Dentists build customized invisible trays that patients can wear during the course of the treatment. These trays begin to change the alignment of the teeth over time. During the treatment, as time goes by, the dentist will change the trays in phases to achieve the desired shape and look. Invisalign trays are perfectly easy to use and do not demand any changes in diet or lifestyle during the course of the journey.

Most patients, therefore, prefer Invisalign over braces.

  • Dental Crowns and Bridges

Dental crowns and bridges are well-known procedures. Again just like dental implants these procedures serve both cosmetic and restorative purposes.

Dental crowns are dental caps that are fitted on top of weak teeth or implant posts. Dental crowns are custom made to resemble the shape and size of the natural tooth.

Dental bridges literally bridge the gap between natural teeth. Dental bridges are supported by a false tooth, dental crowns or teeth with fillings. The dental bridge takes care of multiple teeth through the course of the treatment.

Dental crowns and bridges are complex procedures that involve multiple sessions and interwoven aspects. An experienced dentist who understands your case is the best bet to move forward for these procedures.

  • Teeth Contouring

Teeth contouring is a technique in cosmetic dentistry that helps patients eliminate any aesthetic defects in their teeth. This procedure will give you a guaranteed “Brilliant Smile”.

Dental contouring involves removal of tooth enamel (the outermost layer of the tooth) to reshape it in a more symmetrical manner. In this procedure, the dentist will reduce the size of the tooth, change its shape or length to give a more pleasing effect.

More and more patients are opting for Teeth Contouring because the change is subtle but positive. It is a procedure that gives them confidence in their smile.

  • Teeth Bonding

Teeth bonding is a procedure which works well on chipped teeth or cracked teeth. In this procedure, composite resin fillings are attached to the teeth with a dental adhesive. This bonding technique repairs and restrengthens weak teeth.

The material used in this procedure is safe and long-lasting. In a teeth bonding procedure the dentist takes an enamel-like dental composite material and applies it to a tooth’s surface, sculpts it into shape, then hardens and polishes it.

The bonded teeth look natural and improve in appearance as well.

Why Do We Recommend Cosmetic Dentistry To Patients?

Cosmetic Dentistry is an emerging field in dentistry. These procedures aim at giving patients a shot at perfection as far as their teeth are concerned. They encapsulate the concept of a smile being more than just a way to show happiness. Cosmetic dentists understand that a smile plays a massive role in patient’s self-worth and self-confidence. They want to give patients a chance to be more themselves and live fuller lives.

We recommend cosmetic dentistry procedures based on the needs and desires of the patients. We evaluate every patient as a unique individual and our approach at Dental Designer varies from patient to patient. We want patients to look good and feel good with our procedures. Hence, we plan and perform treatments accordingly.

So if you are looking for someone who can give you a Brilliant Smile then look no further than Dr Harmanpreet Kaur!

How To Select Dental Insurance For 2020?

dental insurance covers dental exams
dental insurance use before year ends

Oral health care is a primary concern amongst Americans. We want the best dental treatments for ourselves as well as for our family. Hence, 77% of Americans have opted for Dental Insurance plans according to the National Association of Dental Plans.

It is that time of the year again when most employers are in talks with health care insurance providers and their employees to figure out the best insurance policies for the company as well as the employees. Earlier dental care policies were a fringe benefit that very few companies offered. But over time most companies have begun offering dental coverage along with general health coverage.

As a dentist based out in New Jersey, a lot of my patients ask me about what could be the best dental plans for them, what should they be looking for in an ideal dental insurance and how to figure out what works best for them as individuals and as families. This blog will cover all of these queries and go a little further as well.

Let’s start at the basics.

What Is Dental Insurance?

Dental insurance plans are similar to other health insurance plans. A dental health insurance plan is designed to pay for a portion of the total expenses related to dental care and dental treatments.

In order for an insurance company to cover your dental care expenses, you will pay a predetermined amount to them known as “Deductibles”. The amount of the deductibles varies based on the plan’s coverage and the insurance company as well

What Are The Different Types Of Dental Insurance Plans?

Here’s a list of the different types of dental insurance plans:

1. Dental Indemnity Insurance Plans

This is one of the most popular types of dental insurance plans in the USA. Most employers opt for a dental indemnity insurance plan for their employees. This is a traditional health care type of a plan which covers the broadest dental treatments at minimum deductibles.

Since corporates opt for this plan and also co-pay a certain amount of the deductible alongside their employees the annual maximum cap per employee and per dependent is higher than any other plan.

2. Dental Health Maintenance Organization (DHMO) Plans

This is a relatively new entrant in the dental care plans segment. But it is a fast-growing option that a lot of Americans are happily opting for. This plan offers insurance coverage through a network of dentists. These dentists could be from the area, or state or even nation-wide.

Members who opt for DHMO plans will get discounted rates when getting treatment at any of the dentists’ clinics who are in the network. The annual premium under this plan is generally low and members benefit from the expertise of all faculties of dentistry by opting for a DHMO plan.

3. Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) Plans

This type of plan is similar to the DHMO plan but it covers a larger network of dentists under its umbrella. It is an organization run by the American medical bodies and this organization has an agreement with insurers and third parties to provide the best dental care to everyone under this plan.

PPOs also allow their members to take medical treatment from outside the network albeit the difference in costs will have to be paid for by the member themselves.

What Is Covered Under Dental Plans?

This is a very common question raised by our patients from time to time. Dental insurance plans generally tend to have a 100:80:50 coverage ratio. Essentially, they cover 100% of preventive dental care, 80% of basic procedures and 50% of major surgeries and treatments.

Most dental plans cover annual preventive check-ups and teeth cleaning etc. You will have to carefully go through your policy document to check the exact coverage under the plan.

Please note, that the benefits of preventive check-ups (generally 2 per year for the policyholder) will lapse at the end of the term. So, if you haven’t availed your preventive check-up benefit yet, come on over to our clinic to get it done.

What To Consider When Buying A Dental Insurance Plan?

We know that choosing the right insurance policy for your dental care needs is not easy. It’s a lot of technical and financial jargon and it’s a lot of paperwork.

So, following is a list of checkpoints that could make this decision easier for you and your family.

The Amount of Deductible – The amount of deductible is the first thing most people look at. You want an amount that is affordable and gives you a great coverage plan as well.
The Co-Pay Arrangements – If your dental insurance plan falls under employee benefits, then most probably your employer will also be contributing towards your deductible. Check the co-pay ratio with your company’s HR department to understand the co-pay arrangements.
The Annual Maximum Cap – Every insurance policy has an annual maximum cap defined clearly. Read the document to know what is your cap amount. Because any expenses that go above the cap amount have to be borne by the policyholder in his/her individual capacity. Thus, ensure that you are comfortable with the annual maximum cap specified in your policy.
The Waiting Period – Major insurance companies in America have drastically reduced their waiting period on dental insurance policies. Generally, your dental plan activates within 72 hours of the policy date. But the actual waiting period on major procedures may vary from policy to policy. Hence, check that section when you are looking at the policy documents.
Dental Emergencies – This is an important part of your policy that you need to be aware of when you buy the policy. Dental emergencies can happen at any time and maybe simple to tackle or complicated. So, read the document to find out how your insurance provider handles dental emergencies, who are the dentists you can go to in case of an emergency according to the policy etc.
Pre-Existing Conditions – In case you have any pre-existing conditions then check the coverage for those conditions as well.
Claims Procedure – Every insurance policy has a claims procedure. This is important for you as a policyholder! Check how the claims procedure works, how much time does it take to reimburse your claims and what is the claims approval rate of the insurance company.
Riders – In case you feel like adding on certain riders to your policy such as orthodontics, dental implants or braces etc.  you can add them when you are filling out the forms. It will, of course, increase your annual deductible but it will also give you additional coverage.

Broken or Missing Teeth? Your options to replace them

PFM Crowns

Broken Front Tooth! What to do?

A broken front tooth impairs your ability to eat and talk and there is this embarrassment that comes from missing a key part of the smile. A broken front tooth sounds simple, but there are actually several varieties of trauma that a person can suffer.  You need to make a quick decision after breaking or losing the front tooth.

Dr Harmanpreet Kaur of Dental Designer explains what exactly you should do if you have broken or loose tooth. She will be discussing what treatments are the right options for patients and will also answer FAQs on the topic of dental implants, bridges and crowns.

Broken Tooth
A broken tooth occurs when a substantial piece of the tooth is knocked out, often exposing its roots and pulp. This will look like a mixture of white, dark, and red areas. If you suffer a broken tooth, you will likely be in moderate to severe pain and will feel the need to see a dentist as soon as possible. Left untreated, broken teeth can result in severe pain, infection, swelling, and a potential medical emergency.

Loose Tooth
A tooth concussion is another name for a loose tooth as a result of taking a hit to the mouth. It is typically accompanied by bleeding and mild to moderate pain. If your tooth is still intact but a little loose, you might be feeling lucky because you were spared the worst. That might be true, but it does not mean you can sit back and relax. Depending on the strength of the hit, the tooth might have damage to the root or have been pushed into your jaw, neither of which is visible to you.
In both situations, the dentist will take X-rays of the affected area to determine the severity of the situation, then create a treatment plan for temporary and permanent solutions based on the severity of the injury. If the broken front tooth cannot be saved, the doctor will discuss your options for short and long-term tooth replacement options. These may include a crown, bridge, implant, or partial denture (flipper).

What Are My Options To Replace Missing Teeth/ Broken Tooth/Loose Tooth?

Our teeth are designed to work together. Each tooth is connected to two other teeth in the opposing arch. When we lose a tooth it’s like taking a pillar out of a building structure.  At first, nothing happens, but soon gravity and external forces take over and the building starts to collapse. It’s the same with our teeth: pressure and other forces win. The teeth either side of the gap begin to collapse inwards and the opposing teeth start to move. This results in malocclusion.

The longer you wait to replace missing teeth, the more complicated and costly the replacement gets. In a few instances, you may even sacrifice replacement options – for example, the bone at the gap resorbs over time and so an implant may not be feasible.
Dr Harmanpreet Kaur DDS, dentist in North Plainfield suggests that there are various ways to replace missing teeth and all have different cost implications and benefits. The available tooth replacement options are partial dentures, dental bridges, and implant.

What Is A Dental Implant?

Dental implants are surgical-grade root devices that support permanent tooth prosthetics that are manufactured to last a lifetime. These artificial roots are anchored in the bone beneath the gums where they become fused into the jaw. A crown is mounted atop the implant for a long-lasting and natural looking smile. Many dentists and patients prefer dental implants because they offer the same function as natural teeth and also help prevent bone atrophy in the jaw. Dental implants may be used to replace a single missing or damaged tooth or to restore an entire smile. A dental implant is an artificial replacement for a tooth root for a missing tooth and is usually made from titanium. The important function of an implant is to achieve close contact with the surrounding bone. Over time growth of the bone onto the implant surface enhances the stability of the implant.

An ideal Candidate For Dental Implant?

Dental implants are suitable for adults with good oral and general health. Some dentists will decline to place implants if you are a heavy smoker and cannot give up altogether. However, each implant case is different and if you do have any health problems such as heart disease or diabetes,  then speak to your dentist Dr. Harmanpreet Kaur before starting any treatment. It is only in some circumstances that health problems prevent the use of dental implants altogether.

How To Know If You Are Suitable For Implants?

Implant Consultation Special
At your initial consultation, Dr Harmanpreet Kaur D.D.S will check if it is feasible to provide you with implant treatment. You will be expected to provide a detailed medical history and there will be a complete examination of your mouth and remaining teeth to discover the nature and extent of any existing dental problems. Oral X-rays will be taken and models of the teeth will be prepared. X-rays and models are used to determine the missing tooth gap and volume of bone that is available for placing an implant.

At this first appointment, you will be provided a treatment plan is required to stabilize any gum- or tooth-related problems. Establishing good basic dental health is a key stage in any treatment plan. Habits such as heavy drinking or smoking can decrease the long-term health of gum and bone and therefore limit your chances of receiving a dental implant.

What To Expect During A Dental Implant Treatment?

The placement of dental implants is a multi-step process that typically takes between 6 and 9 months to complete. It begins with a surgical procedure during which a titanium rod is placed where a previous natural tooth root once was. The gums are sutured shut over the implant, where it will stay for several months while it heals and begins fusing with the surrounding bone. Due to the nature of implant placement and its average procedure time of between 1 and 2 hours, you’ll be sedated and/or anesthetized for the duration of the treatment. At the conclusion of the healing period, you’ll return to be fitted for permanent crowns and have them placed.

How Much Does A Dental Implant Cost?

Dental Implant costs can range from $2500 to as much as $5000. Even if the cost is partly covered by your insurance, there is still a big out of the pocket expense.

Dr Harmanpreet Kaur of Dental Designer explains what exactly are you paying for when you get an implant.

The Implant
Dental implants are made of a titanium post that is screwed into your jaw bone and designed to replicate the form and function of tooth’s natural roots. Titanium metal is strong, lightweight and long-lasting. A foreign object that has to stay in your mouth for a number of years should be strong and durable and therefore is expensive.

Porcelain Crown
The porcelain crown sits on top of the post and resembles your original tooth. Crowns are custom made to fit in with the rest of the teeth. It is important to match the shape and color of the other teeth so that end product blends seamlessly with your smile. A customized artificial tooth that feels exactly as the natural tooth has a higher cost.
The final dental implant cost is high because it’s a surgical procedure. There are years of training a dentist go through and experience is required to exactly know where to place the dental implant. Only a carefully planned surgery can precisely install an implant.

What Post-treatment Care Will I Require?

It is normal to experience some discomfort, including bruising and swelling following a dental implant procedure. However, inflammation and pain may be managed with over-the-counter medications, hydrocodone, or codeine. You may be asked to eat only soft foods for approximately 2 weeks until the surgical site heals.

Fun Fact About Dental Implants

Did you know that approximately 30 million people live with no natural teeth in one or both jaws? But more and more dental patients are opting for dental implants as a means of tooth replacement. The American Academy of Implant Dentistry reports that 3 million people currently have dental implants – a number that is rapidly growing by about 500,000 per year. Modern titanium implants were first developed in the 1950s, but archaeologists have determined that ancient Egyptians and Mayans were the first cultures to implant artificial teeth.

Dental Implant vs Bridge

A dental implant consists of an implant crown and an implant abutment, whereas a dental bridge consists of two crowns and one dental pontic (dummy tooth that replaces the missing tooth).

The decision of whether to have a dental bridge or a dental implant depends on your unique situation. The primary consideration as to whether an implant or a bridge is the best option is the condition of the teeth adjacent to the gap. If the adjacent teeth are in good condition, then an implant is probably the way to go. However, if the adjacent teeth are in poor condition for example heavily filled with poor cosmetics (such as amalgam fillings or chipping), then they would probably need crowning anyway before the procedure. In that case, it is a no-brainer to opt for the dental bridge.

Another consideration is how long the tooth has been missing – whether you’ve had a recent extraction or the gap between the teeth has been there for a while.

These considerations all affect the decision as to whether to have a dental bridge or dental implant. Generally, there is little cost difference between a dental bridge and a dental implant. That said, a dental implant requires adequate bone and if there is an insufficient bone for a dental implant then bone grafting may be required. This can push up the cost by several hundred dollars and possibly extend treatment time from four months to eight months.

Crowns and Bridges

Dental crowns and bridges are custom-fitted tooth prosthetics that are used to replace or restore damaged or missing teeth. Crowns – also known as caps – are fixed over the surfaces of natural tooth structures or dental implants. Bridges are used to fill in the gaps left by missing teeth and are anchored in place by the natural teeth or crowns nearest the empty space. Both crowns and bridges are non-removable and must be cemented in place by a licensed dentist. Patients who get crown or bridges to restore their smiles achieve both the function and appearance of natural, healthy teeth.

Fun Trivia About Dental Crowns And Bridges

Did you know that the Etruscan civilization was the first to use crowns as a means of restoring damaged teeth? In fact, the materials they used – ivory, gold, and bones – were still the standard in dentistry as recently as the 20th century, when porcelain crowns were first invented. Today, crowns and bridges are customized specifically for the patient’s bite and can usually be placed in as little as one or two dental visits. With proper cleaning and regular dental check-ups, crowns and bridges can last many years or even a lifetime.

Frequently Asked Questions About Crowns And Bridges

  • Is a crown or bridge right for me?

If you have a tooth that is damaged or decayed, but still intact, a dental crown may be right for you. If your tooth is missing, but its former position is surrounded by other tooth structures, a bridge may be the solution for you. Schedule an office consultation to determine whether you could benefit from crowns or bridges.

  • What should I expect when I have my crown or bridge placed?

If you are a candidate for a crown or bridge, your teeth will be reduced to ensure a proper fit. An impression will then be taken of your bite and used to fabricate a mould for the crown or bridge. If you are choosing porcelain prosthesis, its color will be matched to the natural shade of your other teeth. If a dental lab is making your crown or bridge, you may be fitted with a temporary restoration until the permanent one is ready for placement.

  • Do I need to follow any post-treatment care guidelines?

Your teeth will need time to heal following the crown and bridge placement process, so it is normal for you to experience some sensitivity – especially to hot and cold. Additionally, you may experience soreness in the gums surrounding your restorations, though this is usually manageable with ibuprofen and should subside within a few days.

Dental Fillings Can Look Like Natural Teeth Too!

dental designer creates brilliant smiles

Dental fillings are a part of dental care treatments that are vital in keeping your teeth healthy in the long term. Dental fillings become necessary in case there is decay, discolouring, unnatural open spaces between teeth or chipped off and misshapen teeth. If you don’t get a filling on time then your teeth may continue to decay affecting your ability to chew food properly and will put you into a state of constant discomfort. To avoid this it is better to go through a dental filling treatment with your Dentist.

Dr. Harmanpreet Kaur will be discussing different types of dental fillings and FAQs about the treatment in this blog.

Different Types of Dental Fillings

To use them, you need to know what dental fillings really are. If any open spaces arise in the tooth, it is imperative that they are filled up. This is because any opening leads to the roots and nerve vessels under the tooth being exposed to outside bacteria. So in order to close off all these open spaces, dental fillings are used. Thus, it can also be seen how these dental fillings help prevent tooth decay by blocking bacteria.

Dental fillings are offered in a variety of materials. You simply need to read on to find out which one will suit you the most!

Silver or Amalgam Fillings:

These fillings last longer too, around 10-15 years or sometimes even more. And they do this while costing so much less than the gold fillings. In fact, they even cost less than composite fillings.

Silver fillings (amalgams) are equally strong as the gold fillings; able to withstand any sort of chewing force.

However, there are many disadvantages to amalgam fillings. The first is that they tend to create a grey hue in all the surrounding tooth structure. Thus, making itself and all the teeth around it seems less aesthetic due to the discoloration.

Also, they lead to cracks and fractures since amalgam fillings experience more expansion and contraction. This causes the surrounding teeth to crack or fracture under the force of the fillings.

Tooth-colored Composites:

The main reason so many people prefer these fillings is that they are aesthetic, as they blend in with all the other teeth. However, these too cost a hefty amount; way more than the amalgam ones.

Composite fillings provide better support, as they chemically bond to the tooth structure. Also, less tooth structure needs to be removed when fitting these in, as compared to the other fillings.

However, these fillings have greater disadvantages. They are one of the least durable types of fillings. They cannot withstand any chewing force and may break when chewing harder items. Also, composite fillings chip off easily.

Like gold fillings, these too require more than one visit to the dentist. They also take greater time to place than the amalgam fillings.

Gold Filling:

The number one advantage of gold fillings is that they are more durable. They mostly last 10-15 years or even longer at times. Very rarely do gold fillings corrode away. At the same time, gold fillings also cost a lot more than all the other ones.

In regards to strength, they are one of the strongest amongst the other available. Gold fillings can withstand any chewing force, from dried fruits to even cracking a nut open.

It also comes down to aesthetic. Some people prefer gold fillings solely because it visually appeals to them. Conversely, many even dislike it and prefer simple fillings which match the rest of their teeth.

Another disadvantage of gold fillings is that they require additional visits to the dentist as compared to the simple other fillings.

Should I Replace Amalgam Fillings?

As discussed above there are certain glaring disadvantages of Amalgam Fillings. Not too long ago, amalgam was the material of choice for dentists when placing fillings. Amalgam fillings, when properly done, were inexpensive, easy to place and long-lasting. As dentistry has evolved, however, the disadvantages of amalgam have become more apparent. Apart from a lack of visual appeal, one of the main disadvantages of amalgam is that, traditionally, it cannot be chemically bonded to the tooth structure and is retained in the tooth by way of physical undercuts. Additionally, amalgam expands and contracts and can cause cracks and fractures in the tooth as well as in the filling itself. Concern has also been raised about the mercury content in amalgam.

Given the above considerations, the question arises as to whether your amalgam fillings should be replaced. Dr Harmanpreet Kaur D.D.S. recommends replacing amalgam fillings, if there are signs of decay around the filling, chipping or cracking or poorly adapted margins. You may also consider replacing amalgam fillings purely for aesthetic reasons.

Alternatives to Amalgam Fillings – Metal-Free Fillings:

Metal-free fillings are restorations that protect the beauty and longevity of your grin. Providing metal-free fillings as an alternative to traditional metal amalgam is just another way our team at Dental Designer achieves conservative, minimally-invasive dental care. Fillings made from composite resins and porcelain can restore unsightly old metal fillings. Many are surprised by the natural results metal-free fillings provide a tooth once covered by the old-fashioned silver mercury amalgams. The talent of cosmetic dentist Dr. Harmanpreet Kaur allows her to offer a restoration that is so natural-looking in appearance, the filling goes unnoticed by others. It’s not the only appearance that makes traditional metal amalgam fillings less than ideal. The composition of these fillings requires more removal of the healthy tooth before application. Also, the metal is known to expand or contract with temperature changes in the mouth, which may cause the tooth to crack or break. When tooth decay has caused enough damage that a filling is needed, Dr. Harmanpreet Kaur chooses metal-free fillings for our guests because of their tooth-sparing qualities and protective nature. The strong bonding technique of a metal-free filling requires the least amount of tooth removal and provides a strong seal that keeps the tooth safe. In fact, the composite resin material that makes up these fillings beautifully enhances the strength and durability of the tooth, in some cases making it even more stable than it was naturally. Here at Dental Designer, our goal is in always providing the most comfortable, conservative dentistry possible. Offering metal-free fillings to patients is just one of the many ways we accomplish this goal.

Composite Fillings:

Composite fillings – also known as tooth-colored fillings – are dental restorations designed to be inconspicuous and natural in appearance. They blend well with the teeth and appear more natural than amalgam fillings, which are darker and more easily seen by other people. Composite fillings are made of ceramic and plastic compounds that chemically bond to the teeth. They can be used to fill in decayed areas of the teeth, as well as to help repair chipped or broken teeth. Most dentists use composite restorations to treat the teeth closest to the front of the mouth, as they are more noticeable when patients smile. However, advancements in dental technology and the composition of composite fillings have made it possible for Auburn dentists to also use tooth-colored fillings on molars, which receive more wear than other teeth.A composite filling can be placed in just one appointment and is a more affordable option to CEREC fillings.

CEREC Porcelain Fillings:

For replacing larger fillings, CEREC porcelain is a superior material. It is durable, is aesthetically appealing and enjoys a success rate of at least 90 per cent after 10 years. CEREC fillings are natural looking, strong and biocompatible and generally last longer than other types of filling materials.

Frequently Asked Questions About Composite Fillings

Do composite fillings allow dentists to preserve more of the natural tooth structure?

This is because composite materials chemically bond to the surface of the tooth like an adhesive. The process takes slightly longer to complete than traditional amalgam fillings, but patients can preserve more of the natural portion of the teeth while enjoying a restoration that is discreet and understated.

Am I a candidate for tooth-colored fillings?

If you have a cavity, broken tooth, or a deteriorated filling, you may be a candidate for a tooth-colored filling. Schedule a dental consultation to find out if composites are right for you.

What should I expect if my dentist decides a composite filling is right for me?

During your visit, your gums and teeth will be anesthetized with a local anesthetic near the site of the filling. Once the area is numb, the decayed or damaged portion of your teeth will be removed to make room for the new tooth-colored filling. A resin will be placed over the area and cured with a hand-held light for less than a minute. The new filling will then be shaped and polished before the procedure is complete.

What type of post-treatment care is required after getting a composite filling?

Composite fillings are cured with light at your dentist’s office. You should be able to return to normal activity and oral care immediately after your visit. It’s normal for treated teeth to experience some sensitivity to hot and cold in the days following treatment, but sensitivity that persists beyond a week should be reported to your dentist.

Dr. Harmanpreet Kaur will discuss with you the differences between filling options and depending on your particular case might recommend one over the other. Sensitive Teeth Could Be An Alarm Bell For Decay

Do You Feel Your Teeth Tingling?

Whether you’ve just taken a sip of soda or you’re eating a spoonful of cereals, you can’t get past the weird tingling sensation that’s emitting from your teeth. It is not a phantom feeling, but a real symptom. While this doesn’t necessarily hurt, it’s enough to make you feel annoying. This sensitivity can easily turn into tooth pain if not attended immediately. That’s why your dentist in Plainfield NJ, Dr Harmanpreet Kaur is prepared to explain to you exactly what this sensation is and how you can take care of it.

What Is The Reason Behind Tooth Sensitivity?

Tooth sensitivity occurs when external stimuli reach the dentin layer of your teeth.  The dentin layer covers the nerves in your tooth and provides you with an additional layer of protection from external elements. That’s why every time you drink that is hot or cold, you’ll feel sensitivity.

If you’re afraid that your dentin has become exposed or if you just feel sensitivity in general, you should see your dentist. This is because the sensitivity could indicate that a cavity or gum disease is present in your teeth.

What are the causes of sensitive teeth?

The common causes of sensitive teeth are worn tooth enamel or erosion. This can occur either through chronic teeth grinding or due to frequent exposure to acids in the foods and drinks you eat.  It can also occur from gum recession, decay in the tooth, cracked or broken fillings and post dental treatment work done by your dentist. Sometimes getting crowns, fillings and teeth whitening done can lead to tooth sensitivity.

What Are Cavities And How Best To Deal With Them Proactively?

Let’s define what a cavity is – basically, a cavity is the loss of some part of the tooth due to decay because of the acidic reaction that demineralizes the crystalline structure of the tooth. However, there are early signs of that decay that can be detected which only affect the outer covering of the tooth – the tooth enamel. While still confined within that layer, the tooth structure can be re-strengthened externally by means of fluorides or any substance which promotes a re-mineralization of the weakened structure.

When left unnoticed and unaddressed, that decay will then extend beyond that outer layer and into the inner layer of the tooth which makes up the bulk of the tooth which is called the dentin.
It is then when that process “branches out” and the decay spreads deeper into the tooth and leads to a softening of that layer.
At some point, the outer covering of the tooth loses support and collapses. That is what most Dentists consider as cavity and this is when patients must seek out the dentist to restore the broken part of the tooth.

In some cases, however, the decay may go so deep into the tooth without the outer layer being broken until the pain is felt. That pain is a signal that the pulp (‘nerve”) of the tooth is reached and, in that case, a root canal treatment would be necessary.

So, to answer the question, the best way to deal with early signs of dental decay is to actually have your dentist detect them.
If you visit your dentist regularly every 6 months, dental decay can be detected in its early stages and treated before it spreads into the deeper layers. Early cavities can be detected before any pain is felt and treated by conservative and minimally invasive restorations on which modern day dentistry revolves around today.

What Are My Treatment Options For Sensitive Teeth?

Treatment for tooth sensitivity depends on case to case. For example, if you have a cavity that’s causing sensitivity, a dental filling can be placed to protect your teeth and reduce discomfort. In case your tooth’s dentin has become exposed,  your dentist can apply a fluoride varnish or gel using a mouth tray. The dentist also uses a dental bonding agent (sealants) to seal the dentin surface and that protects teeth from external stimuli.

If you know you grind your teeth in the night, ask your dentist about a custom fit night guard. If you’re experiencing tooth sensitivity on a daily basis, schedule an appointment with your dentist in Plainfield NJ today to get it treated!

Causes Of Tooth Pain | Dental Designer, North Plainfield

teeth-cavity

Toothaches have become the most common dental problems these days. Many patients visit a good dentist to get rid of tooth ache and overcome such problems. Several factors may be the reason for tooth pain. It occurs when dental problems persist for some time and create a bigger issue. By availing early treatment, you can prevent toothache and prevent the condition from getting worse. Take a look at the following reasons why someone suffers from tooth pain:

  1. Tooth decay – Tooth decay starts with cavities which affect the enamel. Once, the decay damages the enamel, it advances towards dentine, causing you pain and sensitivity. Finally, it reaches the innermost layer of tooth called pulp initiating sharp toothache.
  2. Gum problem – You may encounter inflammation, redness and bleeding gums along with tooth pain due to gum disease. It is recommended to visit a General Dentist in Plainfield as soon as possible else, gums and bones may get damaged. A dentist may suggest you to undergo gum treatment to clean bacteria and prevent further damage to the gums and adjacent bones.
  3. Injuries or fractures – You may suffer from cracked or chipped teeth due to an injury from accident, sports, eating something hard and whatsoever. Severe tooth ache occurs when the fracture is extended to the middle of the tooth where nerve endings are there. There may be times when you may not experience pain in spite of having cracks in your tooth. Your Dentist may suggest picking fractured teeth before it causes any problem.
  4. Damaged dental fillings – Dental fillings can protect sensitive parts of the tooth. Due to damaged fillings, the sensitive areas are exposed to food particles, pressure, bacteria and temperature. You can experience pain and tooth sensitivity during chewing.
  5. Teeth grinding – Teeth grinding causes toothache, pain in the jaw, neck and other muscles. You might not realize the problem as it occurs involuntarily during sleep. A General Dentist advises to wear a customized mouth guard during sleep to solve your tooth pain problem.
  6. Incorrect brushing and flossing – Some people put too much pressure on teeth during brushing and flossing that causes the gums to bleed. When you apply excess pressure for a long time, this can cause your gums to be shrunk and damaged teeth thus, resulting in pain.
  7. Tooth sensitivity due to temperature – If you experience tooth pain during or after eating cold or hot foods or drinks, this may lead to tooth sensitivity. Your enamel may be damaged and the dentin may get exposed. The end part of the nerves stays over there that create tooth sensitivity by coming into contact with anything.
  8. Misaligned wisdom teeth – You may experience toothache during eruption of wisdom teeth. Misaligned wisdom teeth cannot erupt through the gum line which leads to inflammation and severe pain below the gum. You may contact dental professional for emergency dental care and treatment.
  9. Dental abscess – Due to gum problems or dead nerve, you may suffer from dental abscess. It is chronic and produced around the teeth. Sometimes it develops excessive pain and swelling. It is suggested to visit a General Dentist soon as abscess is a kind of infection that can damage your overall health condition.
  10. Inflammation of sinus – You may suffer from toothache when the sinuses get inflamed due to common cold or flu. In this condition, you will develop a range of symptoms in upper teeth that include sensitivity, pressure and constant pain.

By reading my blog, you have come to know about the reasons of tooth pain that can cause serious discomfort and tooth sensitivity. It is recommended to brush your teeth two times, floss once and undergo regular check-ups to improve your oral hygiene and reduce the risks of toothache.

Thank You

Is Teeth Whitening Safe?| Dental Designer, North Plainfield

teeth whitening before after results

Is teeth whitening safe? Many of us wish that our smiles were a little whiter, but is it something that’s worth risking your health for?

The good news is that teeth whitening methods have come a long way over the last few decades and is generally considered safe for most people. However, there are still some important factors to consider as you decide whether to start treatment, either at home or at the dentist’s office.

To Whiten or Not To Whiten?

Several factors of our modern lifestyles actively work against our ability to maintain white teeth.

Here are a few of the common daily habits that can stain teeth:

  • Drinking coffee, tea, or other dark liquids that can leave stains
  • Smoking cigarettes or using other tobacco products that contain tar
  • Not brushing your teeth often enough, or not brushing thoroughly enough when you do
  • Tooth trauma or injury

Regardless of why your teeth are stained, at some point you will likely wonder whether to look into teeth whitening treatment in order to brighten up your smile. Keep in mind, as long as the teeth are free of cavities and your gums are healthy, there is little medical harm in stained teeth.

So, the decision really rests on your personal preference and the how you feel about your smile. We can’t make this decision for you, but we can assure you that professional teeth whitening methods are safe should you choose to do it.

Evaluating Treatment Options

Once you’ve decided to move forward with teeth whitening treatment, the next step is to decide whether to visit the dentist’s office or try an at-home solution. The main difference between these options is the amount of bleaching agent used.

As you might imagine, professionally trained dentists are able to use higher concentrations of peroxide for whitening treatments versus what is available for at-home use. However, with the higher dose comes the expertise of a trained professional so you can rest easy knowing that the treatment is being administered properly.

If you decide to go the at-home whitening route, there are several different products on the market to choose from. Each has its own requirements for how often you should apply whitener and how long it should stay on your teeth.

No matter which product you choose, make sure that you follow the directions on the package very carefully. This will ensure that you are staying safe while getting the most out of the at-home whitening product.

Other Considerations

While the American Dental Association considers teething whitening safe, it is generally not recommended for pregnant women or nursing mothers. Consult your doctor and ask for safe alternatives.

Teeth whiteners, either at home or when professionally applied, can increase the sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures. This can usually be managed by using toothpaste for sensitive teeth or with over-the-counter pain relievers. If you already have sensitive teeth, ask your dentist about alternative whitening options.

If you are uncertain about whether something in your dental or medical history would be affected by teeth whitening, the best thing to do is ask your dentist. No question is too silly or trivial; any good dentist or hygienist should answer all of your questions thoroughly and professionally.
